Paul Singer doesn't like the minimum wage

Over in America. But I doubt he likes it anywhere else either. Well, I mean, he's against a hike in the wage. Yeah, Paul Singer. Christ. Oh, Mr Singer is the boss of the Elliott Management hedge fund, I suppose. Never mind. I'll tell you something, dear reader(s), I'm sick of explaining to these guys, guys like Paul, that capitalism ain't just for them, you know? It's for other people, too. Ordinary people are allowed to make money, too. Now, don't get the wrong idea. These ordinary people, they're not asking for the fucking moon. They want to eat and pay their rent, that's all. And the classic argument is: "An increase in the minimum wage will destroy jobs." Ah, well, be careful. Be very careful. What if the poor come back with: "Fuck your jobs, man. We don't want your stinking slave jobs, anyway. Maybe we'll take a leaf out of Charles Manson's book and get medieval on your rich boy asses." Ha! What are the rich going to do then? Get out the water cannon? There ain't enough water cannon in the world, son. So be careful. Be very careful. My advice is: "Put the minimum wage up, then we can have a bit of fucking civilization, you dig?" It's simple, real simple. Why do I have to explain this shit?

End of sermon. 'Sermon, Mikey?! There aren't any priests that talk like you, man.' I know, Voice. They're all pussies. These are desperate times. They should man up.

If Jesus were alive, he'd talk like me. I'm sure the Bible has been messed about with. Jesus had balls, you dig? He wasn't in the religion racket for the money, the house, the company car, the expense account. He had different fish to fry.

It's hell on earth.

Liontrust's inflows aren't so mad at the moment

Do you remember last summer, dear reader(s)? 'I do, Mikey.' It was a lovely summer, Voice. I hope it's going to be nice this year. / Anyway, last summer, I wrote that Liontrust was getting mad inflows, man. 'I remember.' Well, the situation has changed. 'Oh dear.' Yeah. Liontrust saw inflows fall by 22 per cent in the final quarter of 2013 (due to someone singing Bob Marley's Redemption Song in the office every day, all day long. It distracted the workers. But they've got rid of the idiot now, thank God!) So, should we be concerned? 'Well ...' Well, all I can say is, I'm not concerned, man. 'No?' Liontrust has more than £3.5 billion under management. 'Christ! What are we worried about, son?!' Nothing, Voice. Nothing at all. Everything is beautiful with Liontrust.

And everything is beautiful with me! / Gilly, Gilly is definitely finished. 'No! I don't believe it!' Oh yes. I had a quick run through earlier this morning and it sounded real cool. With my acoustic guitar, it sounds like a classic piece of bubblegum pop. (The country vibe has gone.) But with an electric guitar, I reckon it could sound like a garage band classic, like something The Stooges would have done.

Things are getting serious ... / There are going to be three songs on my demo. The top two places are sorted. So, it's a choice between Gilly, Gilly and My Heart for third place. I'm saying with full conviction that My Heart is one of the greatest songs ever written, but then so is You're Lying which will be in the second spot. I'll probably go with Gilly, Gilly because it's cool and groovy, you dig? / Three years of heartache, man. I've sweated blood on these songs. Writing this blog has been a piece of piss - yeah, even my best posts like the immortal words one - but getting these songs has been a nightmare.

Radio silence for a while. No more music updates! I've got rehearsing and recording to do.

Well ... I've bought myself a luxury egg sandwich to celebrate. Free range eggs, the works. / Laters, reader(s) ...

Will Labour's 50p tax plan kill jobs?

I hardly got any sleep last night. I stayed up late (or early) making more changes to Gilly, Gilly. I haven't played it yet. Christ knows what it sounds like now. I'm not sure I want to know. Maybe I should go back to My Heart. / But let's focus on Labour's plan to raise the top rate of income tax. Will it destroy jobs? No, is the short answer. WE (or I, not you - ?) WILL NOT GIVE IN TO THE THREATS OF THE RICH!!! What's the tax rate in Somalia? They can go and live there if they don't like it Great Britain.

Half a million people in this country need food banks just to survive, man. Should they be taxed more to pay for the financial crisis they didn't fucking create? Wake up! - if you're asleep. (I'm awake!) You can sell one of your Ferraris if things get tough. / Oh, by the way, there's more to life than jobs. There's family, friends, and eating ice creams in the park on a sunny day, you dig? What's more, we're all gonna die, son. The world will roll over us. The world won't even exist one day. So, fuck jobs! And fuck the economy! Think of God, eternal, and universal. Think of the universe, yeah? Even the universe will go. But God will live on. Our immortal spirits will live on.

End of sermon. / No, there's more! I tell you what will kill jobs and kill capitalism: the rich will. Capitalism ain't looking too respectable these days, is it? Think about it, man. The rich are bringing capitalism into disrepute and playing into the hands of socialists. / Of course, a lot of people would argue it was never respectable ... but things have certainly taken a turn for the worse these last six or seven years.

That's the end of the sermon. / I'm worn out, dear reader(s). I mean, I only got about two hours' sleep.

The good thing is, none of this will affect me in Malibu. What's the tax rate in Malibu?

Finance? Monday morning? Do me a favour, son!

Oh, you're such an optimist, coming here, looking for financial news, on a cold Monday morning ... in January! What have you been smoking, man?

No, I ain't writing that shit today. I'm not in the mood. I've got song business to take care of, later. / I wrote most of the lyric for Gilly, Gilly over the weekend. I only need two lines now. Hopefully, I'll get those today or tomorrow. Then there will be radio silence while I rehearse and record. I should be ready soon, God willing. It's taken enough time, ain't it? It was never like this when I was a kid. However, I have higher standards these days.

The lyric is pretty simple. It's cool though. I'm trying to write the ultimate pop song, and I just might do it. / Oh, let's wait and see, man. I'm staying positive.

I watched that Leonardo DiCaprio film on TV last night, Blood Diamond. A brilliant film. It really shows how corrupt the world is. There's a great line: "God left this place a long time ago." Great, but not true. He's watching us. So be careful ...

Laters.

Update (4.00pm): I've finished Gilly, Gilly, but it's a bit different now. 'A lot different!' Not so much bubblegum pop like I was planning, more, er, country pop. (Is there such a thing? Is that what Taylor Swift does? Or have I just invented it, the way Gram Parsons invented country rock? I mean, this is real poppy shit. Bubblegum country! Yeah, I've invented bubblegum country!) / I don't know what to make of it. It will probably take me a week or two to get comfortable with the change. Man, I just have no control! Jonathan Auerbach

Do you know Jonathan Auerbach, dear reader(s)? Have you ever heard of him? 'They've never heard of him, boss.' All right, Voice, my readers can speak for themselves. / Nothing to say? So, you've never heard of him. Never mind. Jonathan Auerbach co-founded long/short equity fund Hound Partners with Scott McLellan. 'Mikey, no one has heard of Jonathan or Scott! Why do you waste your time like this?' Shut up! They've just launched a pair of hedge funds, man. That's news, that is. My readers want the news. 'Oh, wake up! If your readers wanted the news they wouldn't come here. They'd go to Reuters or Bloomberg.' Well ... 'Your readers are here for the blood and fire.' Christ. I ain't got no blood and fire to give no more, son. Don't you understand? 'You're going through a bad patch.' No! 'Yes. You've got these funny ideas about music now. All that Burt Bacharach shit, Malibu and that.' Piss off! 'Mikey, you've got to open up the desert.' NO WAY! Absolutely not! Unless it's as a rock and roll shaman. 'For crying out loud! / What about these hedge funds then?' Well, one is a version of the Hound Partners Concentrated fund. 'Right.' And the other is a version of the Hound Partners Long fund. It's all onshore and offshore, apparently. 'Fascinating!' Yeah. Well ...

Oh, I don't know. / Lunch, lunch, lunch ... Cheese Sandwich! Er, after lunch, I'm going to take Hound Partners for a spin. I might try to throw in a bit of blood and fire. I've got to keep the punters happy, I suppose. What a life, eh?!

Nigel Farage has said that women working in finance must sacrifice family life to succeed

Well, well, well ... / What Nigel should have said is: Anyone who wants to succeed in finance must sacrifice their LIFE!!! / The gender doesn't matter. And it's more than family life that anyone must give up. They must give up the whole of life.

Now that's a sacrifice! No fun, no going out, no going home. You must stay in the office. You must sleep in the office - in the toilet, or under your desk. Your boss isn't fussed. You are given a choice, dear reader(s). Get in the toilet, or get under your desk! But you are not going home. You'll never go home again. Unless you're happy to be a loser.

And it could have been so different. / Man, I got into finance to change things, you know? I wanted to see bankers and hedgies ... flowers in their hair, dancing and singing, hitting the peyote, out in the desert ... with the blood and the fire, so alive! / A few of you had the balls and the spirit to join me, but not enough of you. So I shut down the desert, astral and physical. / Where are we now? I'm isolated, cold, remote, an angry god. I'm trying to get away from here, with my music. And you? Well ... NO LIFE. When you're not sitting at your desk, you're under it or in the toilet. Ha! I can't help you no more. I'm looking after number one. Yes! As soon as I get a publishing deal for my songs, maybe even a recording deal ... farewell, my friends! Farewell! / Oh, this blog will fall silent, and years from now strangers will come: "What's this?! What genius, madman, or demon put such insanity before the eyes of ordinary men and women who were only looking for a shedload of cash?" / We all have a destiny ...

I'm not going to Davos - again

I can't be bothered with it. It's just going to be a bunch of twats talking shit. What's the point? Nothing will change. Well, the rich will get richer, I suppose.

I wonder if George Soros is going to Davos this year. He normally phones me, but I haven't had the call yet. Maybe he's given up. I ain't ever going to Davos, man!

I don't know if my angel is going. I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that.

...

I saw The Wolf of Wall Street yesterday. (Have you seen it, dear reader(s)?) I think it might be the craziest mainstream film I've ever seen, and I reckon it's the best financial film after Wall Street. Martin Scorsese seems to have got his shit together after years of pretty average films. It's his best since Goodfellas. And I didn't even notice that the thing was three hours long! / Leonardo DiCaprio was great. Some actors are film stars, and some are serious actors. DiCaprio must be the best combination of film star and serious actor around at the moment. / Jonah Hill was brilliant as well.

...

Music? Well ... / I've been listening to a rough recording of You're Lying this morning. It's definitely my greatest achievement in life, and I've got to get it to people's ears, man. But I can't yet, not without Gilly, Gilly - which still needs a lyric. I'm not using My Heart, but I've got the other pop song - from 2012! (Where does the time go, man?) If I can sandwich the great crooner's torch song of You're Lying between two really commercial pop songs on my demo, there'll be no stopping me. In fact, it will be a classic case of ... NO PRISONERS!!!

So, after lunch, I'll be playing my guitar for the rest of the day ...

The FCA is banning adviser/provider jollies

Which can only be a good thing. Too many people in finance have been having a good time at someone else's expense for too long. They've been going to football matches, and attending parties in hotels, and going on trips to Paris ... 'And the recent darts final at the Lakeside Country Club. A fish supper with Bobby George, for fuck's sake!' Yeah. Thank you, Voice. And God knows what else. It has got to stop! There is work to be done!

I just hope the FCA is going to take a look at journalists, too. We've all heard stories of bankers and hedgies taking journalists out to dinner in fancy Mayfair restaurants, and Christ knows what else. It's disgusting. They're not pure like me, these journalists. I don't go to dinner with no one. I consider myself lucky if I've got enough money in my pocket for a bag of chips at the end of a hard day's work. Do you know what I mean, dear reader(s)? Do you see where I'm coming from? There's corruption everywhere! And people are enjoying themselves! Evil people with no morals.

It's just the way the world is, I suppose. / Don't let anyone pay for anything! And when someone tells you something, ask yourself: Why are they telling me this? And then ask yourself: What do these fucking creeps want from me? / You're like a fly in their web, dear reader(s). And they're like these really big hairy spiders. It's sick. / Well, you've got to take your hat off to the FCA, but I don't know if things will ever change.

Just make your own mind up, man. Go and live in a cave. No, a hut in a forest. / Why do we hear so much about people on benefits, but hardly hear anything about the demons avoiding billions in tax? USE YOUR FUCKING HEAD! It's the same problem. You are being lied to. / Do you like being lied to? Doesn't it make you feel pretty small, and worthless inside? What are you going to do about it? / These animals think you're NOTHING.

However, I don't think that. I think you're SOMETHING, a human being. It's not your fault God put you in a bad world. Maybe He wants you to learn a lesson. I don't know. And not from no fucking scripture or holy man. That stuff is for the slaves. / God is out there in the cosmos, and He is in you. Forget everything else you've been told because guess what ... lies. Yeah. It's all lies.

Never mind. / God will make the sinners pay. So prepare yourself. And remember: Corruption takes many forms. You can be a phoney friend to someone. Or you can believe something purely for the reason that it helps you. But it might harm someone else. Very subtle and minor corruption is still corruption, and God sees and knows EVEYTHING. You have been warned. / The purer you are, the higher you will get. And watch out for the signs. God is a fire in your head.
