Doomed!

Right. We're all doomed, and there's nothing we can do about it. 'What?!' There's an article on the Guardian website today. [I won't link to it. What's the point? Just take it from me, dear reader(s), we're all doomed.] 'Er ... why are we all doomed, boss?' Because, Voice, my little invisible friend, climate change is irreversible now. 'Oh.' We've got about a hundred years left. That's it. 'Christ! Can't we do anything about it?' Well, man, Elon Musk is the only one doing anything, and, uh ... [Do you think he works the way he does for his health? Get real, people! More of this later ...] He's building a big rocket that can take one hundred people to Mars in one go. 'Great!' Yes, it's certainly impressive. However, loads of people are going to be disappointed when they find out that they haven't been invited to the new colony.

Ha! 'Ha!' Ha! Yes, I guess the only thing to do is ... enjoy life, while it lasts, man. That house in Malibu? It's only $13 million. I'll be able to get that money together, definitely. 'Go for it!' Sure, the house will probably collapse into the sea at some point, but I'm living for today, you dig? 'You said ten years, boss.' Ten years is today in cosmic terms, son. 'Oh. Yeah, I get you.' Thanks, Voice. I'm glad you're keeping up. [Maybe I can get the staff, after all.] Ha!

Okay, okay. Now, our Elon works roughly one hundred hours a week. [Lots of hundreds, today, eh?] That's what I'm working. YES!!! The thing is, one hundred Musk hours is probably four hundred of anyone else's hours because he's so effective in his working. I must - 'That's what you've got to do, boss, become more effective.' Yeah, I know, I know. I just said it! Christ! It will take time. Obviously, it will. However, I will get there. / 10X your life, everyone!

...

Okay, okay, okay. This is the last post of the week. Is there anything else? 'Er ... music, Mikey!' My music? I'm working out a strategy. Whatever happens, I'm staying on Twitter and YouTube until I get interest from record companies and publishers. No gigs! There's no point in being some middle-aged guy gigging around, playing to five or six people in a pub - who ain't even interested! You digging me on this? 'Yes. It's a good strategy.' Thanks! I'm just going to write the greatest songs ever, put them online, and then ... let the devil take the hindmost! If that's the right expression. It sounds good, anyway.

Okay, blog fan(s), pop fan(s), alligator(s), crocodile(s) ... have a nice weekend! 'Laters!' Yeah, bye!

It's a snapshot!

PR email, you see. 'Where's the full report, boss?' Uh, attachment to the email. 'Have you looked at it?' No. 'Why not?!' Christ! Because the snapshot is enough for me, son. I don't need no full report. I probably won't understand it, anyway. 'Oh.' And I'm too busy to read whole reports, Voice. If you've got the snapshot, you don't need the report. 'Okay. / Who's it from?' Er ... S&P Global Market Intelligence. 'Nice.' Yeah. A private equity thing.

Well, anyway ...

Investments to North America doubled in size - attracting 73% of cross-border money, with California taking 62% of that.

Yeah, I'll be living in Malibu within ten years. 'Ha! You always say that, boss.' Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I'm serious now. 'Oh.' It's one of my written goals, I mean, every day, man. I want a house like this. 'Nice.' It's very nice.

In the world of Venture Capital (VC), the total capital allocated by EMEA VC firms grew by 98% in 2018 vs. 2017 study periods. Similar to PE investments, majority of EMEA VC money went into North America and Asia, with €2.3bn and €1bn, respectively, in the 2018 study period.

Oh, oh! How come Brexit Britain ain't getting none of this investment, snapshot people?! 'Ha!' Do we even need to ask?

Private equity fundraising in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) saw a significant growth in 2017. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence's data, buyout funds of local GPs focused on the regional investments raised €1.37bn in capital commitments. This is almost 4x times larger than total capital raised in 2015 and 2016 combined (€340mn).

Okay. Good for them.

UK Real Estate took the lion's share of capital from global GPs, with the largest deal of the quarter also in the sector with Blackstone Real Estate Advisors acquiring Taliesin Property fund Ltd.

Well, with the severe shortage of housing in the UK, real estate will always be all right. We need to build some houses, and I mean council houses, man. Lots of them!

Okay. Uh. There's a lot of this snapshot, you know. I'm glad I didn't read the full report now. 'Do the year of the exits, boss.' What's that?! 'Christ! This -'

2018: the Year of the Exits? Exit activity in 2018, interestingly, is already 34% of capital realized from global targets compared to the whole of 2017. Such a recent uptake in Media & Telecommunication exits might be explained, to a degree, by strong exit multiples and the industry's concerns over the sector due to various issues coming to light as a result of the bidding war on Sky Plc.

Right. That's got to be enough, surely. 'Buoyant European direct lending!!!' What?! 'Oh, go on, please. That's my favourite.' Ha! Your favourite!

Buoyant European Direct Lending: The European direct lending market has developed rapidly since 2014, with dozens of new managers setting up, including a number of private equity firms that have set up their own lending operations. The market is top-heavy, with the largest five or so managers executing many more direct transactions than the plethora of smaller players.

Okay. ENDS. ENDS. ENDS. The email doesn't actually say ENDS, for a change, but I'm saying it, dear reader(s). ENDS!!!

...

Anything else? No. ENDS!!!

Perivan and EthosData announce ... !

Oh! Oh! What?! What?! 'What, boss?!' Oh, what, Voice?! What, reader(s)?!

Perivan, the UK's leading financial printer, managed services and enterprise technology solutions provider and EthosData, a world-class, award winning, global Virtual Data Room specialist, have today [uh, yesterday] announced a strategic partnership following the recent transfer of the Millnet Financial Printing business (EthosData's previous UK partner) to Perivan.

Oh, a strategic partnership. Well, that's all right, ain't it? I suppose. I mean, I don't know.

Perivan and EthosData will jointly market their complementary technology and publishing services and expertise to create a comprehensive suite offering for financial transactions, from initial due diligence through to deal completion and ongoing shareholder, investor and board communications.

Oh, okay. Er ... 'Does Robin Bishop have anything to say about it?' Who?! 'Robin Bishop, man.' Yeah, who's that, Voice?! 'Christ! Robin is the managing director at, uh ... Perivan Financial Print.' Oh. Well, I don't know if he's got anything to say. 'Ask him!' Oh, Christ. Robin. Robin. Uh. Robin. He's not there, man. 'Make an effort, boss. Please. Establish the mind connection. Or ... a soul connection!' Ha, ha, ha! A soul connection, this early in the morning? Do me a favour, son! No, I'll try for the mind connection again. Robin! ... Robin!! ... Robin!!! Oh, here we go -

Robin Bishop, Managing Director, Perivan Financial Print, says, "We are very excited about this partnership which we view as an extension to the previous nine years of successful collaboration between EthosData and Millnet Financial prior to them joining the Perivan family".

Great! 'Brilliant!' And? Robin? Come on, Robin. And? 'He's gone, boss.' FFS! This is beyond a - 'Hang on! We've got Francisco Lorca now!' -

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy the continuity of working with John Redford and look forward to working with the wider Perivan team. This partnership will allow us to help our clients even better, from the document preparation before the due diligence commences to the very end after the deal is closed, we will be able to manage the entire process for our clients to save them valuable time," says Francisco Lorca, CEO, EthosData.

Okay, okay. Thanks, Francisco! / This is a lot of hard work sometimes, but Francisco saved the day.

...

Right. Anything else? Motivation! There's one thing in that audiobook I've been thinking to myself for ages, and I've only heard Grant Cardone say it. 'What, Mikey?' That competition is useless, baby. You don't want to compete with anyone. You need utter domination. Let everyone else compete. 'Nice one!' And that's why I'm going crazy rehearsing my songs at the moment ... because my performing isn't on the same level as my songwriting yet. Actually, it is, on the smaller, easier songs, but not on the big songs that I still need to make decent recordings of. / So, wish me luck, pop fan(s)!

Ah, but I won't be doing much practicing today, man. 'Oh. Why not?' I've got a conceptual to write, Voice, No. 606. / So, uh ... wish me luck, blog fan(s)!

Aviva Investors has hired a couple of people ...

Yeah, er ... to its real estate unit, whatever that is. 'It's the real estate unit, boss.' What? 'It's the real estate unit, man. Property, buildings, you know?' Yes, yes, okay. Thank you, Voice.

Okay. The people in question. Daniel McHugh. And Melanie Collett. 'Where are they from, which firms?' Christ knows! But our Danny is the head of UK real estate now, and our Mel is the head of real estate asset management. And what the difference is ... is anyone's guess, you dig? Obviously, I, er ... I wish them both the best of luck, like, in their new roles. I'm just wondering ... 'What are you wondering, boss?' Well, we're getting awfully close to the summer season, aren't we? You could argue that it's already started. 'The weather people aren't sure yet.' Oh. About what, Voice? 'About the weather.' Oh. 'Sure, it's sunny now, but some people are saying we'll be back to winter temperatures in a week.' Christ! I hope not. I mean, I like a joke as much as the next person, but ... you know what I mean? 'Yeah.' Well, I suppose the Aviva Investors mob will just have to stay in the pub a bit longer. I don't know if Danny and Mel signed up for that ...

Ha! Obviously, it's not my problem. However, I am concerned about all the boys and girls at Aviva Investors. 'You want to see them hold on to their culture, don't you, boss?' Of course I do! I've said it before, son, and I'll say it again: Aviva Investors is a refuge from the modern world. 'And Schroders can like it or lump it.' Ha! Yes.

...

Right. Anything else? Music? My music? I wrote a song on Friday. That's right. In just one day, instead of the normal messing around for weeks and months. It's not the greatest song ever, but it's good enough to use and not scrap. So that gives me thirteen songs. / I actually forced myself to write it in one day - as a sort of test, you dig? Professionals sometimes need to be able to come up with songs on demand like that. Oh, I'm rockin' in the free world!!!

Right. Anything (more) else? Self-help? Man, I got all the help I need now. Don't worry about me, dear reader(s). I'm second time a-ROUND on The 10X Rule audiobook, and I can say it's the best motivational material I've found to date. And I've really been looking, as you know. / YOU(!) - !!! If you listen to it and then don't 10X your life, you've got a serious problem. Get your shit together!

Later(s), crocodile(s)!

No news is good news - yet again!

Important update (21/04/2018): Forget about those two books on a loop! I'm done with them. (I know the Elon Musk book inside out, anyway.) I've bought the audiobook of Grant Cardone's The 10X Rule, and that's what I'm doing on a loop from now on. It's pretty awesome. Cardone has great tonality in his voice, too. There's quite a bit of repetition - ha! - but I think that's good. It's everything you need to know about taking massive action. / Laters!

Well, well ... / No decent PR emails neither! I don't care, man! It's the end of the week, anyway. / Oh, I've finished that new book, for the first time. Now I've got to go back to the beginning ... a-ROUND, and a-ROUND, and a-ROUND. And same thing with the Elon Musk book, at the same time, too ... a-ROUND, and a-ROUND, and a-ROUND. Until I'm absolutely fucking DIZZY(!) with greatness!!! Ha! Yes, it's my life, dear reader(s). Don't tell me how to live it.

Right. Er ... Brexit? Christ! I don't discuss Brexit no more because I'm only focused on myself these days. 'Oh.' Oh, hello, Voice! 'Hello, boss!' However, Brexit seems to be getting weaker by the day. Which is a good thing. And, actually ... maybe that's the reason I don't write about it now. I mean, it's not worth talking about, is it? 'Stop talking about it!' Okay, okay. Christ!

Anyway, what are you doing this weekend, reader(s), anything, uh ... nice? The sun will be out. Personally, I can't be bothered with it, the sun, not in the city, like. (I learnt my lesson yesterday.) Maybe I'll get a week in Cornwall soon ... until then I'm just going to work, you dig? Really hard, too. When I'm not blogging these days, I'm doing my rock and roll. That's it. No days off! And I'm happy, man.

Right. Anything else? Er ... not really, no. 'Can't you think of anything, boss?!' You think of something! If it were so easy, Voice, you'd be thinking of stuff to write about, and then I'd pay you more. 'Ha! You don't pay me anything. FFS!' Well, you're an intern. What do you expect? 'This is not acceptable!' Oh, oh! Who are you going to complain to? No one can see you. I'm the only one who can hear you. 'The readers can hear me.' Oh, Christ! Get a grip! Only because I'm typing your words up, son. Be grateful for that. At least you're getting some exposure.

Ha! It's a hard life in the world of spirit, ain't it? / Well, see you later(s), crocodile(s)! 'In a while, alligator(s)!' Yeah. Bye!

My day, uh, yesterday, and my new discovery!

Okay, okay. Dear reader(s), I didn't feel like blogging on Wednesday morning, so I went into central London to try and buy some new jeans, right? I also thought it might be a nice idea to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Ha! Big mistake!

Firstly, I couldn't find the jeans I wanted. Secondly, not finding those jeans threw me into a very bad mood, and I didn't even care about the sunshine then.

However, I did pop into Foyles to have a look at the self-help books. (I mean, you know what I'm like, yeah?) I saw one on the shelf called The Times Ten Rule ... or something like that, by someone I've never heard of, too. I guessed straight away what it was about: massive action. And I was right! I flicked through it for a few minutes. "Oh, another Tony Robbins wannabe." And then I left the store.

But on the Tube going home, still pissed about those jeans, I started thinking about the book, that maybe I should have bought it. £20! A lot of money, really, for something I'm already familiar with. Anyway, I got back, switched on my smartphone, and started looking this guy up, you know, the author. Well, I found some of his rather crazy videos on YouTube, and I thought to myself: oh, interesting! So then I decided to buy one of his books from Google Play, and I downloaded it to my phone. I just went with the one with the title that most appealed to me. But, Christ, man! The cover is bloody awful! It's a picture of the author sitting on the engine of a plane in a state of excitement - I suppose, I don't know. Pretty dodgy! I nearly didn't buy the book. But I'm glad I did.

Now, as you already know, dear reader(s), I'm reading Ashlee Vance's Elon Musk on a loop. Well, that book describes the actions of Musk more than his thoughts and feelings. Which is fine. It's a biography, after all. The thing is, though, this book I bought yesterday - I'm about a third of the way through it - could have been written by Musk himself! With his thoughts, and feelings, you dig? / This is making me think that perhaps I should read both books on a loop at the same time. The impact could be devastating! ... in a good way, obviously.

So, uh ... 'Boss!' What, Voice? 'What is the fucking title of the book you're going on about?! Please!' Ha! Oh, sorry, Voice, reader(s). It's called Be Obsessed Or Be Average. And it's written by Grant Cardone. I definitely recommend it. But be warned: this book is hardcore, and not for everyone. It's certainly not touchy-feely.

Good night!

[No. 604] A shorter version of Elon Musk's life

Digital start-ups in Europe?

Uh, this is a PR email from last week. Look -

The European Commission Vice President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness is meeting the founder of Europe's 10th highest valued start-up who believes that Europe is just 5-10 years away from producing Google or Amazon-sized tech giant.

Well, I'm sceptical myself. While I think we should stay in the EU for reasons of general business and basic civilized living, I'm not sure I can see a European Google or Amazon emerging. 'Maybe they'll surprise us, boss.' Who will?! 'Whoever's, uh ... doing the start-ups, man.' What, and working forty-eight hours a week? Ha! We don't have the culture, Voice. / Obviously, it's a good thing that your average worker is protected and not forced to work more than those hours, but what if you're a madman like Zuckerberg, Bezos, or Musk? Those guys work crazy hours, dear reader(s) because they need to, you dig? 'I think you can opt out.' Can you? Oh, I hope so.

Anyway ...

London, 12th April 2018 - Gianpiero Lotito, founder and CEO of Europe's tenth highest valued start-up FacilityLive, has met with Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President of the European Commission for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness. The discussion mainly focused around the creation of the next 'unicorn' generation in Europe.

Unicorn generation? A generation of unicorns?! Whatever. 'Ha!' Why can't they just speak normally? Please!

The meeting took place just after Mr Katainen announced a new investment vehicle seeded with €410M of public money to help start-ups reach €1B 'unicorn' status in Europe. FacilityLive is also a founding member of the European Tech Alliance. Mr Lotito has previously said that Europe is just 5 to 10 years away from producing a giant on the scale of Google or Amazon.

Yeah, yeah, okay, okay. Five to ten years, so you reckon. We know that, son. Tell us something we don't know. 'Here he is, boss -'

Gianpiero Lotito, Founder & CEO of FacilityLive, said: "We talked about many topics which are on the European digital agenda today. Chief amongst them the European digital ecosystems of the future, how start-ups can benefit from public procurement, and how artificial intelligence will be applied in Europe. We also spoke about our idea of Small Valleys, digital ecosystems that are ideal for Europe, that we are trying to grow in Pavia, in Italy, as a model. We tried to express the unique point of view that European start-ups have towards technology innovation and we found an interlocutor who was not only attentive and prepared, but also curious to know what Europe is trying to express in this field. He was also interested to hear about the mindset of young companies, start-ups and those who aspire to become European and global players tomorrow, a sign that Europe is paying more attention to the entrepreneurial mindset."

Right. I'll see it when I believe it. 'Eh?!' When I believe in it, Voice, what they're doing, like, then ... I'll take a look at it, and actually see it, yeah? 'Oh, okay.' It's perfectly clear.

...

Anything else? Self-help? Those self-help gurus don't tell you to read a biography of someone you want to model ... on a loop, do they? 'You've discovered something there, Mikey.' Fuckin' A, I have! / Of course, it's got to be someone motivational. Don't read the biography of some bloody nutjob who's going out every night to Stringfellows and getting wasted. That's just common sense.

Well, laters.
