Imagine. / Yes, Lennon's solo world-beater. A lot of people don't like it because of the "soppy" or "naive" message. Well, I'm not concerned with that. I'm looking at the song from a technical point of view, and it is perfect. The lyric and the music are very inspired. They go together perfectly. The song has grandeur.

I'm still beating myself up because I can't write more like MY(!) five world-beaters, which is ridiculous, really, for a singer/songwriter that no one knows about, BUT(!) ... I'm fifty, man. You dig? If I were twenty-five, I could get a recording contract with songs like Lucky You and Round The Bend. Songs that I've actually been able to record to my satisfaction, bloody years ago!

Finance, in more detail? Extended conversations with the Voice? Christ. I know I don't want to go back to the blood and fire. So, it's going to be difficult.

Okay, okay. My work life? One hundred-hour weeks. Yes. Consistently. I've got to do it. I can have my birthdays off, and a couple of days at Christmas. I can go to Cornwall once a year. I can walk to Richmond and back once a week. (That's only three hours.) However, I don't want to hear any silly talk of work/life balance. Please, no! It sickens me, frankly.

Music business. Okay. Okay. Okay. Which brings me to my, uh ... musical goals. They will be achieved or I will die. That's it. I'm fifty years old. Dying when you're twenty is a tragedy. But it's merely unfortunate when you're my age. So my commitment is total. And no fear. No fear at all.

Your desire and your will are magical things

There are two possible explanations for the two greatest songwriters - oh, so far! - finding their way into the same band.

[I'm talking about Lennon and McCartney, obviously, and The Beatles.]

1] God or the goddamn cosmos put them there. Man, I'm not ruling it out because I believe in God and I believe in the cosmos.

2] Their desire and will - from being so close together - pushed them to those songwriting heights. If Bob Dylan and Paul Simon had found themselves in the same band, they would be better songwriters today.

Well, the second explanation is the most likely one. However, "desire" and "will" probably come from God or the cosmos anyway, so what difference does it make?

I don't know.

The greatest artists have always had faith in something. Some power outside themselves, you dig?

I'm not sure Picasso believed in God. However, he believed in the magical, shamanic power of art.
